Taonga puoro and Aotearoa’s arts

thrive at World Stage Design 2025

Aotearoa was well represented at last year’s World Stage Design by Good Company Arts, a multi-disciplinary arts organisation merging visual arts, music, and dance. For the 2025 edition of this event in Sharjah, their presentations were a captivating mix of live and recorded taonga puoro from Mahina-Ina Kingi-Kaui, live film keying from GCA’s Daniel Belton, and improvised music from Mark de Clive-Lowe. SOUNZ sat down with Daniel and Mahina to learn about their collaborative process, the astounding effect that taonga puoro had on their audiences, and the importance presenting Aotearoa’s arts on such a big global stage.
